St Kitts and Nevis Ranks 30th/126 in Global Rule of Law Index 2019

1 March 2019

St Kitts and Nevis has ranked 30th place of 126 countries in the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index 2019. The WJP published its report yesterday, in which St Kitts and Nevis, a small island nation, came 2nd of the Caribbean islands and beat many European countries and the United States in categories such as ‘Fundamental Rights’, ‘Civil Justice’, and ‘Order & Security’.

The WJP’s annual Rule of Law Index is the most comprehensive assessment of different jurisdictions’ adherence to the rule of law. Countries are measured across different categories such as ‘Absence of Corruption’, ‘Fundamental Rights’, ‘Civil’ and ‘Criminal’ Justice, ‘Order & Security’, and income. Of the 126 evaluated, St Kitts and Nevis placed 30th, achieving the same score as Italy and, of the Caribbean islands, beaten only by Barbados, which also achieved the same score. In some categories, despite being a small developing island-nation, the Federation surpassed countries including France, Italy, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Rankings

In the category of ‘income’, St Kitts and Nevis placed in the uppermost bracket – ‘high income’ – the same as many European countries and Australia, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Federation came 16th for ‘Civil Justice’, which measures how easily citizens can resolve issues through the civil justice system, and was above Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. At 26th for ‘Fundamental Rights’, the nation again beat the United States, in addition to Hong Kong, Poland, and Singapore. In ‘Order & Security’, it ranked 29th, once more overtaking countries with larger economic resources such as China, France, Italy, Spain, and the United States. 30th under ‘Absence of Corruption’, the nation achieved the same score as South Korea. For ‘Criminal Justice’, ‘Regulatory Enforcement’, and ‘Constraints on Government Powers’, the Federation came 30th, 31st and 33rd respectively.

A Modern Nation

The importance of adherence to the rule of law cannot be overestimated, not just for citizens but for those conducting business in and with the country. It a key pillar of any democratic society which seeks a high quality of life for its people. For businesspersons and entities investing or doing business in the country, it provides reliability and security. St Kitts and Nevis’ success throughout the Index and the different categories demonstrates its commitment to securing a dependable economic environment for citizens and investors alike. It is evidence of the Federation’s respect for modern values, and points to continued development in the years to come.
