CIU Marks One Year as Statutory Body with Launch of EC $10,000 Local Micro CBI Grant for Small Businesses

The Citizenship by Investment Unit (CIU) of St. Kitts and Nevis is marking its first anniversary as a statutory body with the launch of the Local Micro CBI Grant, a transformative initiative designed to empower local entrepreneurs and strengthen the foundation of small businesses across the Federation.

This new programme, introduced in partnership with First Federal, underscores the CIU’s commitment to driving sustainable national development while creating opportunities for citizens. The Local Micro CBI Grant is focused on supporting micro and small business owners who traditionally have limited access to grant funding, while also providing them with training and resources to help professionalise and grow their operations.

EMPOWERING LOCAL ENTERPRISE

As part of Phase One, 25 businesses will each receive EC$10,000, providing a financial lifeline to entrepreneurs in sectors ranging from snackettes to landscaping services. Beyond monetary support, the programme will also deliver essential training and capacity-building sessions, enabling recipients to enhance their operations and contribute meaningfully to the Federation’s economy.

Chairman of the Board of Governors, H.E. Calvin St. Juste, stated that the initiative demonstrates the CIU’s commitment to inclusive development.

“By channelling resources directly to micro and small businesses including the smallest ventures like snackettes and street vendors we are targeting those for whom access to capital is the greatest barrier. This support is vital to help them transition from a state of survival to one of sustainability and growth. In doing so, we are not only supporting entrepreneurs but also strengthening the foundation of our national economy. This programme ensures that prosperity is shared, resilience is built, and opportunities are created for every Kittitian and Nevisian to thrive,” H.E. Calvin St. Juste.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applications are open to registered micro and small business owners who meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a valid business licence (e.g., snackette, landscaping service, etc.)

  • Have been in operation for at least 12 months

  • Have not received another government grant in the last 12 months

  • Hold accounts at First Federal, into which funds will be deposited

  • Preference will be given to businesses that demonstrate alignment with the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda

APPLICATION PROCESS

Interested applicants can apply by completing a short online form which will request basic business information, proof of valid licences (such as a food handling licence where applicable), and a short explanation of how funds will be used and why their business should be selected.

Referrals may also be submitted through the same process. Final selections will be made by the Cabinet, in collaboration with the CIU Board and leadership team.

The application window closes on 15 October 2025.

A PLATFORM FOR GROWTH

This initiative also serves as a platform to showcase First Federal’s tailored suite of products for small business owners, ensuring long-term access to financial solutions that can complement the grant support provided.

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

This micro-business support initiative aligns directly with the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda, reinforcing efforts to diversify the economy, create local employment opportunities, and build resilience in the face of global challenges.

As the CIU reflects on one year as a statutory body, this initiative stands as a testament to its vision: a programme that not only attracts international investment but also delivers tangible, lasting benefits to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
